I’ll drink to that…..

Today at work, one of my co-workers mentioned that they were stalking my facebook page.! I laughed nervously as I tried to recall if I had any compromising photos of myself on display.! Unable to remember, I crossed my fingers and waited. Then she exclaimed, “And I saw all these photos of you in Mexico with micheladas.!!” jajaja… Guilty as charged 🙂 And a little relieved that there was no other incriminating photos.!

Today is also the 80th anniversary of the end of Prohibition. The 21st Amendment ended America’s grand experiment in moral uprightness in 1933. The noble desire to end crime and drunkenness actually led to more illegal behavior with the surge in speakeasys and bootlegging. Anyone remember Al Capone.?? Apparently at the end of Prohibiton, President Franklin D. Roosevelt proclaimed, “What America needs now is a drink.” I couldn’t agree with him more.!

So in honor of my co-worker’s facebook stalking and the end of Prohibition, I think it’s time to talk about the Caesar.! I have always been a fan of Bloody Mary’s – vodka, tomato juice, Tabasco, and a delish celery stalk.! But in Playa del Carmen, I learned to love Caesars.!! Clamato juice, instead of tomato juice, is the key differentiating ingredient in a Caesar. The Caesar also has vodka, salt, pepper, Tabasco and Worcestershire sauce plus a celery stalk. It is much richer and spicier than a Bloody Mary.!!

Technically, Caesars are native to Canada. And usually outside of Canada and maybe Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas, most bartenders won’t have a clue when you order one. Or typically have the necessary clamato juice on hand. However, you will find no such problem in Playa del Carmen which has a huge concentration of Canadian expats and Canadian tourists in the area. Therefore, it is a pretty common libation in the Riviera Maya. Therefore, I encourage, no I urge, everyone to raise a glass to Prohibition’s demise. Just make sure to keep your photos PG while you’re doing it 🙂 Salud.!

money can’t buy you love….

Or happiness for that matter… But, on the other hand, it does buy you peace of mind. You don’t have to worry about paying your rent, paying your bills, or paying those you owe. It also gives you independence and the freedom to make choices. Without money, you end up indebted sometimes in more ways than one. And besides my father, that is one of the main reasons I returned from Mexico. I knew I was never going to make the kind of money that would have given me the freedom I so desire. And boy do I desire that freedom – to breathe easy, to travel, to live..!!

And in honor of that amazing dream, I want to talk about the new one hundred dollar bill which made it’s debut recently.! It’s pretty savvy.!! Plus it has several advanced security features.! For starters, it has a 3D blue ribbon on the front that when tilted back and forth changes from bells to 100s. Secondly, there is a color changing bell located in the copper colored inkwell. Tilt the C-note and the bell changes from copper to green.!! Of course, the note still has the previous security features such as security thread, portrait watermarks, and raised printing among many others.

The cool thing about new money in the states is that the old money never gets old. That’s why you can have several types of one hundred dollar bills in circulation at the same time; as well as, twenties, tens, fives, etc. However, in other countries, such as Mexico, once new money is created, the old money becomes void. It is no longer viable. I learned this the hard way with ten pesos that I had saved from a visit to Mexico in the late 1980s. I could not use it anywhere in Mexico when I returned in 2010. How curious, no? Que raro.!!

Another curious thing – how money makes the world go round just by itself making the rounds. And that theory is made especially clear in the short film titled – Guan Jondred Dollar. We get to see one ‘one hundred dollar’ bill make the rounds in a small town in Mexico. The characters in the film embody the idea of what happens when you don’t have enough money, but in a lighthearted manner. In fact, I still want to know how the desk clerk times everything so perfectly.!! Ah the joys of living in a small town and knowing everybody’s secrets.! jajaja… I have included this movie before in one of my first blog posts. But I am super excited to include it today with English subtitles.!! Therefore, in celebration of the new C-note – Enjoy the film!

Feliz Domingo mis amigos..!! Happy Sunday my friends.!! This Thanksgiving week and weekend is drawing to a close. And I for one am very grateful for that bit of news.! Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy holidays. I love spending time with the people I love. I actually relish cooking and baking for those near and dear to my heart. But I think it’s everything else I can do without.

There is always some sort of family dynamics getting in the way. Or misunderstandings between friends. Or just something as simple as time constraints, traffic snafus, and one too many obligations. Let’s not forget to add the stress of the perfect meal, the perfect gathering, and the perfect holiday gift at the perfect holiday discount.! Those particular nuisances, I would like to have less of in my life.!

So while I enjoyed Thanksgiving, I have to say I am happy to be returning to a semi normal week. And in the spirit of that confusion, I offer up this week’s Tecate commerical called Tecate Médium or Tecate Medium. The reason for the confusion lies with the wife’s newfound discovery about her husband. The wife goes to a psychic or medium to talk to her dead husband. And the medium is able to channel the husband, but it appears he is not dead.! He is alive and well and gambling with the boys.!! Apparently, his life just became too much for him and he decided to run and hide. Sometimes, I can relate to that desire..!! jajaja… Have a fantastic week.!! Enjoy your life – don’t run and hide from it.! Salud a todos…!!
