My name is Rose. I am a Chicago girl who had a love affair with Mexico and ended up living there for three years. In this blog, I am going to share what it was like to live as an expat in a foreign country.

I will share with you the food, the culture and especially the language!! Basically, the good, the bad and the ugly! As well as the truly magical.

You can follow me on twitter @chirose23. I have also contributed submissions to Lesley Carter’s Bucket List Productions at http://www.bucketlistpublications.com/. My first submission is at http://www.bucketlistpublications.com/2013/09/10/climbing-palenque-in-the-mayan-jungle/

Also, I wrote 10 features for World Spa and Travel Magazine on their Travel Network blog.  Unfortunately, these posts are no longer available on their website as they have changed their name to World Travel Magazine.  Therefore,  I have simply reposted 8 of them to my blog.  I promise I’ll get around to posting the final two 🙂 Some titles include –

1) beyond tacos and margaritas
2) en la playa http://wp.me/p3irTD-Fi
3) Ruins schmuins..!! Where’s the mall..?! http://wp.me/p3irTD-5W
4) when in rome…I mean playa….have a drink or two… http://wp.me/p3irTD-Ic
5) bienvenida de nuevo..!! http://wp.me/p3irTD-Aq
6) en la selva
7) Look. Look! is it a bird? is it a plane? omg – it’s just the sky! http://wp.me/p3irTD-4p
8) el grito..!! http://wp.me/p3irTD-xl
9) discover xcaret – mexico’s eco theme park
10) chela, chelada, mmm…michelada http://wp.me/p3irTD-fd

Finally, if you are wondering how I came up with the title for my blog, I will tell you.! It’s from my friend’s 9 year old daughter, Sasha. She was 6 at the time. She kept asking me how to say words in Spanish. The taco one sorta became a running joke between the two of us 🙂 Enjoy the story…

  11. Dear Rose,

My name is Joyce and I work for ExpatFinder.com.
ExpatFinder.com is a free one stop website for people preparing to move or working and living overseas. We provide a myriad of services for expatriates and we have over 2,000 articles to help and support the people moving around the world and we are now creating an interview section to help the expats with real life experiences!
We quite enjoy your blog about living in Mexico, it is very interesting and informative. Would it be possible to interview you to further share some of your tips and feature some of your first hand experience as an Expat and your interview will be published on our Expat Interview section as a guide for our expat readers. The questions are mainly about the day to day lifestyle of an expat. If it would be possible, could you also send some photographs that we can use?
Of course, if you accept, we can add a link to your blog or some of your website.
The questions are enclosed, feel free to respond freely. You can return the doc with your answers if you accept this invitation.
Thanks in advance and do let me know if you prefer other means to conduct this interview and we would be happy to accommodate your terms.

    Best regards,

    • Hello Joyce.!

I actually am familiar with ExpatFinder.com 🙂 I utilized your website when I was planning my move to Mexico.!! How exciting to hear that you will be adding an interview section to help expats with real life experiences.! Kudos.!!

Thank you for the kind words regarding my blog.!! I would love to do an interview for your website.! I will contact you via email as I did not see the document with the enclosed questions that you mentioned.

Have a great day.! Talk soon 🙂

  12. Hi Rose, thank you for stopping by, I will look forward to reading your posts. I just went to Cancun this year and absolutely loved it…. I scribbled some notes on a piece of paper about my experience so this is a good reminder I should look for it and turn it into a post 🙂

    • Of course.! You have a great blog.!! Cancun is wonderful…but so is Playa del Carmen…and Tulum…and you get the point 🙂 lol… Thanks for the blog follow too 🙂

  13. Wow you are very brave going to Mexico. I hear crazy stories from there. I have traveled a lot too, I look forward to your stories :0) Did you ever drink a cocktail there called Banana Monkey? It’s delicious!

    • Hmmm…I don’t really think I’m brave…lol 🙂 But thank you.!! Mexico is an amazing place.! And a very large place. There are some parts with crazy stories. And then there’s Playa del Carmen where I lived which is like Mr. Roger’s Neighborhood.!! You should go – you will fall in love with it.

I never tried a Banana Monkey.! I was strictly old school – tequila and cervezas. But especially micheladas.!! I will have to try the Banana Monkey next time.! Thanks for the recommendation 🙂

  14. Hello Rose, thank you for following my blog. I lived in Libertyville, Illinois when I was a kid. Never knew then that I would one day speak Spanish and mentor a Mexican-American youth from learning English to accessing college in Virginia. I have often wondered if I would be safe living as a single woman in Mexico. Do you think it is safe to live alone the way I do here, or should a woman have family around to protect her there?

    • You’re very welcome. It’s a cool blog.! I think as in anywhere in the U.S, there are neighborhoods, cities, etc that are safe and those that are not. I lived in Playa del Carmen and I thought it was like living in Mr. Roger’s Neighborhood. Very safe for a single girl. Of course, it’s always nice to have some type of support system wherever you live.!! Good luck.!

  15. You have a lovely blog Rosa .. Loved few of your posts! Looking forward for more of your future posts! 🙂 All the best.. ⭐

    from Being Bettr! 🙂

    • I am well.! I hope you’re doing well too.! And you’re very welcome for the “like”.!! How exciting I get to be a part of your 50th like 🙂 It does make me feel all special.!!

  16. First ex-pat blog I’ve followed (I believe, but then again, I am impulsive) All the best, and I look forward to insight on issues I’m too gutless to flesh out myself!

      • I am most definitely telling him that.! But my father is impatient like me.! Or I like him.!! Lol… Gracias y igualmente 🙂
