Feliz lunes mis amigos.!! Happy Monday my friends.!! How was everyone’s weekend.!? Hopefully stellar.! I know mine was 🙂 I spent a lovely Friday evening with a person who is dear to my heart.! And got a thumbs up on my pie making abilities 🙂 Yay me.! Saturday was hectic from sun up to sun down running errands and squeezing in a late dinner with my father.! Let’s not forget all those workouts.! Geesh…. Though I received another lovely slimming compliment at my job, so it must be working.!

On Sunday though, I went to a goodbye party or a despidida for a very good friend 😦 I’m very sad to see her leave as we have been friends for a long while. We did our master’s degree program and most of our study abroads together while in school.! She even came to visit me during our birthday week when I lived in Mexico. And that’s why dear readers, I can’t even think of throwing stones at her for leaving me because I left first to go live in Mexico. But it’s still sad to see her go 😦

However, I have a new place to visit as she is moving to Puerto Rico.!!! And all I can say about that is “Hola Puerto Rico“.!!! I am totally going to visit 🙂 And so in honor of my dear friend’s departure, I decided to give Dos Equis a break and showcase a Puerto Rican rum. Now in all fairness, Bacardi originated in Cuba. But after the Cuban revolution, Bacardi moved its operations to Puerto Rico and the Bahamas so it could continue to do business with the U.S. and Britain respectively. So, in short, it’s living an expat life too.!! The video is called “Untameable” just like my birthday buddy.!! Have a great week.! Enjoy.! Y salud.!!

blame it on the Kahlúa…

Everyone always asks me – “Why did you go to Mexico?” or sometimes just simply, “Why Mexico?” I give them my standard answer – it’s pretty much my blurb on the About page – I worked for Starbucks for 12 years then I got a degree, my thesis is on fair trade coffee….blah blah blah. I can see I’ve already lost them. Their eyes glaze over and they just nod politely. So I’ve decided that I am going to start telling everyone a different story. It’s my mother’s fault.

Ah, I see. I have your attention already. Good 🙂 My mother passed away a few years ago, but I swear if she were alive today, she would testify to the veracity of my story. And probably giggle too.! My mother was very young when she got married and she had me at the tender age of twenty. I was her firstborn. She went on to have my sister and twin brothers. Now here is where the strange part comes in – my mother never drank.! Never ever! Except when she was pregnant with me.! She didn’t drink before she was pregnant with me and she never drank after she was pregnant with me.! Just with me.!

And she drank Kahlúa of all things.! Now for those of you who don’t know – Kahlúa is a Mexican coffee-flavored rum liqueur. It is sweet and creamy and tastes like coffee because it is made with 100% Arabica coffee and sugarcane from Veracruz, Mexico. Kahlúa means “House of the Acolhua people” in the Veracruz Nahuatl language which was spoken before the Spanish Conquest. It also contains sugar, corn syrup, and vanilla bean. You can drink it over ice or use it in mixed drinks such as mudslides and white russians.

Now I am not suggesting my mother was a lush. On the contrary, she was an extreme teetotaler.! But I guess she had some discomforts when she was pregnant with me and Kahlúa was the recommended remedy. So I find it interesting that I went on to not just love coffee but worship it.! That I fell in love with Mexico and had to go live there. But also that rum makes me do crazy things, so I avoid it like the plague. No need to bore you with those details 😉 When my sister was pregnant with her son – she craved chocolate cake. And my nephew loves, I mean loves, chocolate cake..!! So I don’t think it’s a coincidence that my mom drank Kahlúa when she was pregnant with me and I went on to love all those components of the drink itself.!

Que raro, no?! So the next time someone asks me why I moved to Mexico – I am seriously going to say – “Blame it on the Kahlúa” – and try to keep a straight face at the same time. I leave you with a Kahlúa commercial. Enjoy.!

Since this is a long three day weekend celebrating Memorial Day – I thought I would give Tecate the time off..!! I know what you are thinking, “But Rose, this is a 3 day weekend..! We need Tecate more than ever to jumpstart our holiday fun..!” And I agree..!! I have many good friends in town this weekend. Lots of dinner plans, bbqs and tasty beverages to be had..!!

So in its place, I am bringing in a heavy hitter known as Bacardi Rum..!! I think we’ve earned it…we deserve it… This weekend necessitates more than beer. It’s time for rum and cokes and mojitos..!! The Bacadi Masero or Bacardi Waiter commercial has English subtitles, so no need for me to interpret. Enjoy the change of pace..!! Enjoy your weekend..!! SALUD…!!!
